This summer I had the opportunity to host a book study at my house. The women that the study consisted of were women I have had the chance to connect with and become close to through my bible study at church. These women have become some of my dearest friends.
If you’re a mom, this book is a must read. The author, Alexandra Kuykendall is honest, hysterical, and a realist. She is a MOPS mom, and, like any mom, busy.
Alexandra actually takes a nine month experiment to her life. The experiment is to rekindle her love of her ordinary, yet, at times chaotic, actual life. This is as real as it comes. She shares personal stories and gives practical advice.
In the book club, we decided to apply the categories monthly focus into our lives and share how they were working out for all of us individually. At the end of each chapter she has reflection questions. My book is covered in answers, words, doodling, and list (she talks about those too).
Alexandra talks about the ruts we fall into as mothers. My favorite, since, I’m a fashion lover, was the dressing ones-self rut. Moms. We can all fall into this category. I used to be one of them. Yes. I might have thought that wearing my pajamas until noon was just fine, because, hey, they were cute pajamas. Alexandra talk about getting up, putting on a little makeup, fixing your hair up a bit, and putting on REAL clothes. Even if it is your “mom uniform”. Skinny jeans, top, and some baubles anyone? I had to laugh at her daughters comment after she decided to get up early before her and primp a little.
Where are we going? She asked.
I believe my daughter had asked me the same question when I actually started to pull myself together months after Otto was born. Kids are just seriously, honest. The authors vulnerability made me love her more.
I have to say, I’ve learned to cherish my beautiful, messy, mom life. This book has helped me grasp reality, and treasure the season of life I am in. I have a Father that wants me to enjoy the simple and even chaotic moments. I’m going to grasp fully onto every one.
